The Hermès scarf – a 90 cm silk square weighing about 65 grams – has adorned the necks of the world's most important women and continues to be an essential accessory for all elegant women. Production methods have evolved since the first scarf was made in 1937, but high traditional craftsmanship quality remains the standard. The factory is located in Pierre-Benité, near Lyon, the capital of silk. In the printing department, rolls of silk are fixed on immense tables over 100 metres long. A printer positions a silkscreen frame corresponding to a specific colour and design and applies the appropriate dye. These steps are repeated as many times as frames are needed to obtain the final design. Depending on the complexity, it can take from 24 to 70 applications. Once printed, the silk roll is spread out to dry over the tables for the whole day. It is then washed, dried, ironed and cut. A seamstress gives the final touch with a hand-rolled hem on the four edges of the scarf. The colours used require a variety of tools worthy of a great chef. The assembly of pure pigments allows for the composition of 38 primary colours which, skillfully mixed, produce an infinite range of tones and shades. Every year Hermès creates models based on a specific theme. There are more than 1000 different models, each available in a dozen colours.

Hermes Grands Attelages scarf 1972 Philippe Ledoux – bright red border – almost oatmeal-coloured background – yellow, gold, brown, grey, taupe and black details – the hem is intact and the small label is missing – the border is slightly irregular, perhaps because the hem is flat in some places – no pulled threads has some runs no large stains – however, there is a tiny pinhole imperceptible as you can see from the photos.
